'Criminals have in the past been targeting tourists along the motorways but they have become more brutal,' ADAC spokesman Peter Hemschick says.
Campers, who need to stop for a sleep along their holiday route, should leave the motorway and find a parking spot several kilometres away, off the main road.
'It is more difficult for the criminals to find victims in remote areas and to make a fast getaway after an attack,' according to Hemschick.
Campers should buy a good map and inform themselves about good camping possibilities because driving around in search of a place to park also arouses the attention, the expert warned.
